New compact workstation for questioned
documents has extra facilities
VSC-4C, a new compact and portable workstation
for questioned document examination, has been launched to
replace the company's VSC-4. The new model, with a much improved
specification, is a self contained instrument which can be
operated without a computer and is designed to appeal to private
document examiners and immigration officers, tasked with examining
travel documents.
Full colour as well as infrared imaging, an
extended zoom range, image integration, battery operation
and a slim, lightweight TFT LCD colour digital monitor with
fold-away capability are just some of new features which boost
the instrument's style and performance.
The VSC-4C incorporates many of the functions
of the VSC2000, the company's larger laboratory workstation,
but is presented in a more compact format. The result is a
powerful workstation that is easier and faster to use. Remote
operation with a battery pack or from an automobile's cigarette
lighter socket also adds to the instrument's attractions for
the private document examiner and immigration officer who
may need to work in remote locations.
The addition of a full colour imaging system
to the instrument enables the operator to examine all aspects
of a document, especially the latest fluorescent and retro-reflective
features now printed onto passports, licences, identity cards,
banknotes and other certificates of authenticity. The ×18
zoom lens provides magnification of up to ×25 on the integral
display monitor, and on-chip integration enables weakly fluorescent
features to be enhanced for improved visibility. Embossed
features, common on passports, are also easier to examine
with an integral low-level sidelight.
Although a powerful stand alone system, the
VSC-4C can be enhanced further with the addition of a computer
and Foster & Freeman's QDOS NT software package. This provides
extra facilities including image processing, with programmes
for contrast stretch, de-speckle and black to white reversal;
image analysis, for the measurement of distances, angles and
areas; image comparisons using a split screen, overlays and
subtractions and image storage. Other options include a carrying
case and 12V rechargeable battery pack for go-anywhere applications.
