New fingerprint enhancement system interfaces to NAFIS

Mason Vactron’s fingerprint recording and enhancement system, DCS-3, has a direct interface capability to the UK’s National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS). All UK police forces have access to NAFIS which enables scene of crime prints to be searched against a national database of offenders’ prints and suspects’ prints against the national database of crime scene marks.

Mason Vactron’s new DCS-3 is a complete recording system for latent fingerprints, enabling prints to be digitally photographed and automatically protected through image validation software. Poor scene of crime prints may also be improved with image processing, by removing background interference and improving contrast, for example.

The interface is established by installing a cable link from the DCS-3’s installed network card to the NAFIS terminal and loading an additional software module available from PITO (the Police Information Technology Organisation). Where network security is a concern a suitable firewall may be adopted. The NAFIS interface can also be established on the DCS-121, the previous version of the DCS-3.

UK police forces wishing to install the interface should contact PITO for more information, telephone 0208 3585390
